“Het Kieltje” is a house which used to belong to a cattle buyer.
Wearing a “
kiel
” (smock or a sort of local overall in English) is typical for the cattle buyers. A while ago one used to see these buyers at the farms in the area and over the border in
Holland
as well as at markets (
Bruges
,
Ghent
and
Anderlecht
(
Brussels
) and at competitions. A very well known competition in this area was the”Kieltjes” prize. This dates back to the thirties. However, strict rulings on hygiene and sanitary rulings a few years back put an end to many of these competitions. “Kieltje” gives you a small glimpse of what agricultural
Flanders
used to be.
Up to this day most cattle buyers still wear their (now usually black) “
kiel
”.
